– Welding Rods: SMAW utilises coated welding rods, also known as welding electrodes or welding rods. As the welding arc is struck, the welding rod melts and deposits molten metal into the weld pool, bonding with the base metal to form a solid connection. Welding Rods or Welding Electrodes are available in various grades, based on the parent metals that need to be fused. Check out the tabular column below to learn more:
– Flux: The flux coating on SMAW electrodes melts during welding, creating a protective gas shield and slag layer to prevent oxidation and ensure a clean weld.
Advantages of doing SMAW is that it is cost effective as it requires minimal equipment to conduct the welding process. It’s most beneficial for welding thick materials, and has high penetration for the fusion process.
